Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the mesothelium, a membranous lining that surrounds the internal organs. The mesothelium that encloses the lungs is called the pleura; so pleural mesothelioma is the term used to refer to this cancer when it affects the lining of the lungs. The pleura is actually the most common location for this cancer to take hold. This is because the contaminants that cause the disease (usually asbestos fibers) enter the body through the airway and lodge in the lungs. However, it is important to note that pleural mesothelioma is not lung cancer.

Pleural mesothelioma is ranked as the most commonly occurring form of mesothelioma. It develops along the pleura, which is commonly referred to as the lining that protects and supports the lung. The membrane serves to line a number of cavities within the body. Although pleura mesothelioma affects the functions of the lungs, it is not classified as lung cancer. It is not always easy for doctors to come up with an accurate diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma because of some of the symptoms not being specified or their similarity to the symptoms of other conditions.

The mesothelioma pleural patient goes through four distinctive stages en route to the inevitable end. Diagnosis is difficult for two reasons. First is the time lag for the symptoms to appear. Secondly the symptoms like shortness of breath, difficulty in swallowing, and weight loss, are common to several other diseases.

Traditional treatment for pleural mesothelioma is not very effective. If the problem is detected during the initial stage, surgery could possibly control it. In certain cases Brachytherapy could be a substitute for surgery. Pain management could be helped to some extent by radiotherapy. Chemotherapy doesn’t seem to be effectual. A great deal of research is afoot to discover better management procedures for pleural mesothelioma. Some new methods of treatment are being tried out.
